Compassionate experts in helping families overcome fear of dogs
For over 40 years Cynophobia Classes were run completely free of charge, by Roy Dyer MBE at the Essex Dog Training Centre. Entirely Roy’s concept, the classes he founded received much praise and recognition both across the UK and in several other countries. In 2014 Roy received his MBE for Services to Dogs and the Community.
Unfortunately, in 2024 Roy made the sad decision to retire the classes. Wanting to preserve Roy’s legacy and continue supporting the many children who benefited from the sessions, several of us who had worked alongside him for years decided to carry the mission forward. Just a few weeks later, PAWFECT FRIENDS – Cynophobia Family Support was established at a new venue, ensuring that this valuable work could continue for future generations.
We are one of only three such groups and the only one in Essex.
We are a small and friendly not-for-profit CIC run entirely by volunteers. We care deeply about helping children and adults overcome their fear and get much enjoyment from seeing their confidence grow week by week and for the future.
Our dogs undergo a suitability assessment and a probationary period so that we can rely on them. What makes our dogs special?
The session leader oversees and directs the class, remaining flexible according to the needs of the children. We encourage questions, requests and family participation and try to have fun.
We try to pick up enquiries daily and a telephone call with a class leader helps explain what to expect so we can ease you in gently.
There is currently no waiting list.
A nominal fee is charged to cover hall hire and insurance and this can be pay-as-you-go or by standing order.
